Summer Movie: The Little Mermaid @ The Clark
In celebration of CoastLines: American Prints and Drawings, the Clark presents a selection of films about the complex relationship between the ocean and the land.
The series kicks off with The Little Mermaid. The work of Hans Christian Andersen is given an update in Disney's animated fairy tale, the action punctuated by calypso and sweeping ballads. Sixteen-year-old rebellious mermaid Ariel follows her one true, human love, handsome Prince Eric. When the affair is thwarted by her domineering father Triton, sea-witch Ursula offers to turn Ariel into a human for three days; but the fine print is devastating. This film was a return to tradition for the animation giant. The underwater scenes are spectacular, shimmering, illusory images set behind bold, primary sea life. (Run time: 1 hour, 27 minutes)
Bring a picnic and your own seating. This film is shown outdoors at dusk. Rain moves the event to the Manton Research Center auditorium.
