Adams Free Library July Book Discussion – West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge

West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge is a historical fiction novel inspired by the true story of two giraffes (, Lofty and Patches), that survived a 1938 hurricane at sea and were transported across the U.S. from New York to the San Diego Zoo.

The book follows a young Dust Bowl orphan, Woodrow Wilson Nickel, who drives the giraffes on a 12-day journey, encountering historical figures and fictional characters while exploring themes of resilience, kindness, and the changing American landscape. It's a coming-of-age story that blends adventure, history, and love for animals.
