Shifting tastes in design and emerging architectural styles brought on by the Romantic Movement had a profound impact on American domestic architecture in the mid-nineteenth century.  Changes in aesthetic ideas, coupled with the fruits of the Industrial Revolution, radically transformed the design and construction of dwellings, allowing picturesque architecture to express people’s individuality and domestic lifestyle.  Historic Deerfield’s seventh annual symposium on early New England architecture will focus on cottage and villa architecture, exploring design theory of the time, advances in building technology, developments in domestic conveniences and related topics that initiated and fueled this phase of American architecture.

This symposium will be presented live via Zoom webinar. Registration information coming soon.
