The first settler, Dr. Daniel Nelson came to this town from Stafford, Connecticut. The town was incorporated July 15, 1805. The Mohawk Trail goes up the hills of this town at a high elevation and views from the "Trail's"highest point, Whitcomb Summit (2,240 ft.) are awe inspiring. The first NewEngland over-night cabin was said to be built at Whitcomb Summit. The Hoosac Tunnel was blasted through five miles of granite beneath this Hoosac Mountain Range. Providing the first practical use of Nitroglycerin, it was completed November 27, 1873 at a cost of 200 lives.
