Summer Lecture Series: From the Ashes: Reimagining Pompeii

Thursday, 7:00 – 8:00 PM

June 30th, July 7th & 21st
Abruptly destroyed in a volcanic eruption in 79 CE, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii has been in a state of continual archaeological excavation since its rediscovery in the 18th century. That rediscovery helped inspire a neoclassical movement that swept through Europe and America with enduring impacts on architecture, furniture, and fashion. Pompeii continues to fascinate as ongoing archaeology of the city and other nearby sites yields new and exciting information about its residents and the early Roman Empire. Join us for three lectures sharing some of these discoveries against the backdrop of the continuing fascination with this ancient tragedy and its remarkable impact on European and American art and identity.

June 30th, July 7th & 21st (TBD)

Location: Deerfield Community Center. All Summer Lectures will be presented in a hybrid format with on-site and virtual registration options for attendees. Speakers will present on site at Historic Deerfield unless Covid-19 conditions necessitate a shift to a fully virtual program.

The lecture series is free, however registration is required.

Registration details coming soon.
